Depending on the formality of the affair, guests can be invited by formal invitation, email or phone call. Whichever way you chose, make sure you give guests sufficient time to RSVP. Ideally six weeks in advance if you are mailing invitations and less if you are inviting via email or telephone.

When creating the invite list for the engagement party, keep in mind that there is no need to invite everyone and their mother, just the people that are close to you and your fiancé. Also, you should not invite anyone to the engagement party who will NOT be invited to the wedding.
